π Calm Back-to-School Preparation (or: Mission Possible)
Summer isnβt even halfway through, but a parentβs brain is already multitasking β one part is dreaming of the seaside, another is counting the days until the first school bell, and the third is wondering where that pencil case disappeared β the one that was supposed to be new last year.
And since we all know what the last week of August looks like (two words: βbackpack panicβ), here are a few ideas to make back-to-school prep almost enjoyableβ¦ or at least not dramatic.
π 1. Start with the βarchiveβ
Dig through last yearβs school treasures. Youβll be surprised how many things can actually be reused β with a bit of cleaning, organizing, and maybe removing a few dinosaur stickers. Even a notebook with a few written pages left can be rescued β honestly, whoβs counting?
π 2. Make the list (before the questions start)
The school supplies list always arrives at the last minute β and itβs always longer than expected. Start early, so youβll have time to find whatβs both useful and doesnβt make you wish it were still June.
Meanwhile, look for practical and sustainable options β there are choices that wonβt fall apart in the first term and can even be washed when breakfast decides to go on an adventure.
π 3. Give the kids a βmission: preparationβ
Buying notebooks can be an adventure! Let your child choose the design of their new pencil case or lunch box. And if you really want to impress them β show them something unique yet practical. At first, theyβll look surprised, then curiousβ¦ and soon enough, itβll be called βthe favorite.β
π 4. Preparation isnβt a one-day sprint
Itβs more like slowly stepping into a cold pool β best done in stages. One day you sort through last yearβs things, another you buy a few items from the list, and later you try a βtest runβ of waking up early (does 9:30 count?). The point is β donβt do it all in the final weekend before September 15.
π 5. Think like a parentβphilosopher
This might be the perfect year for a few sustainable changes β instead of single-use or short-lived items, choose things that will last through this school yearβ¦ and maybe even for a younger sibling.
(We, by the way, happen to know some folders that survive at least two grades and three washes with socks β but thatβs another story.)
π In the endβ¦
Back-to-school prep doesnβt have to mean stress and last-minute chaos. It can be pleasant, organized, and evenβ¦ fun. A checklist, a cup of coffee, music in your headphones, and your child next to you choosing what to pack in the new backpack.
And if along the way you discover something that saves time, nerves, and a few plastic bags β thatβs definitely a win.
